Riga – the City of Art Nouveau

We will walk together in the so called open air museum of Art Nouveau. It is amazing, that one third of the buildings in Riga centre is built in the unique style of Art Nouveau. Local name for Art Nouveau is Jugendstil. We will see rich and pretentious facades built according to the projects of Michael Eizenstein, the father of world famous Russian film producer Sergey Eizenstein. Then we will see houses built in more restrained colour and manner by first Latvian architects inspired by national romanticism. You will feel how different is the symbolics
of each building as its decoration was dictated by its owner. Each building has its own unique style and taste. Famous Alberta street boasts of a collection ofJugendstyle masterpieces. Elizabetes and Strelnieku streets are also fine examples of beautifully decorated and artistically expressive Art Nouveau
buildings. We will get closely acquainted with bright history of the end of the 19th and the beginning of 20th centuries style. It lived a short but colourful life.
